🤔 Where are they now?
Jean Utzurrum (@jean8rum) first took over back in June 2020. At the time, Jean was a Marine Biology Master’s student at Silliman University 🌊 and was working as a research assistant studying mesophotic fishes 🐠She has always been immersed in marine wildlife work, ranging from reef conservation to cetacean surveys 🐋
Three years later, Jean is staying true to her love for the sea through her work as a consultant for the Marine Wildlife Watch of the Philippines. She specializes in the study of sharks, rays, and chimaeras, focusing on fisheries bycatch of these taxonomic groups 🦈 Just a few days ago, she co-published an article tackling cartilaginous fishes in Palawan in the Philippine Journal of Fisheries 🇵🇭 Read it here.
📝Research refresh
Weyl now you know ⚛️ University of the Philippines Diliman Associate Professor Gennevieve Macam worked with a team that studied the interactions of Weyl fermions, a massless particle similar to an electron. The team used Einstein’s concepts of causality as applied to space-time to understand Weyl systems in terms of energy and momentum. Read here.
When disaster strikes 🚨 Filipino researcher Ven Paolo Valenzuela from the National University of Singapore worked with scientists from Waseda University and the University of Tokyo to publish a study on how middle class citizens in Metro Manila perceived disaster and land reclamation. Read here.
Drop behavior 💧 Local scientists from University of the Philippines and Air Link International Aviation College teamed up with Université de Haute-Alsace and developed a mathematical model to determine the behavior and size of drops during dropwise condensation. Read here.
Tardigrade tracks through time 🧬 Harvard University PhD student Marc Mapalo was part of a team of researchers from the US and Sweden that investigated the evolution of the tardigrade genome and how it affected the development of the animal’s current miniaturized body plan. Read here.
Miniaturizing the microscope 🔬 Filipino inventor Jeremy De Leon developed a miniature microscope the size of a keychain. The Make-roscope is capable of magnifying organisms up to 400 times with just the use of a tablet or cell phone's front camera. He recently won the Philippine round of the James Dyson Award.
